WHERE WE ARE

Chosen by the southern Sudanese themselves, four targeted locations have been selected by Aid Sudan for community and spiritual development. These targeted regions cover several areas across southern Sudan. Aid Sudan takes several trips a year and in each location, we seek to partner with at least one other organization that already has existing work in the area, should there be a need for a partnership.

Bahr al-Ghazal (northwest) – The name comes from a river that flows east to the Bahr-el-Jebel to form the White Nile. Located on the southern edge of Sudan’s oil-producing area, the region’s topography consists of swamps and ironstone plateaus and is inhabited mainly by the Dinka tribe. The way of life for the southern Sudanese here is subsistence agriculture, cattle raising and game hunting. In July 2008, Aid Sudan will take a team to the village of Aweil located in this region.

Upper Nile (central) – In the heart of Jonglei state, the Bor area is home to many members of the Dinka tribe and one of our Moses Project missionaries, Agook. On the other side of the region, near Sudan’s eastern border with Ethiopia, the village of Nasir is home to many of the Nuer tribe as well as one of Aid Sudan’s Moses Project missionaries, Jengmer. Aid Sudan will take teams to the Bor area in June and November of 2008 and a team to Nasir in November 2008.

Western Equatoria (southwest) –Western Equatoria contains numerous tribes, including the Jur. In 2007, Aid Sudan conducted famine relief efforts in the village of Kulu for thousands of Jur starved and displaced due to the attack of a neighboring tribe. Kulu is also the former home to Executive Director Peter Swann and his wife, Shauna, where they served as missionaries to the area. In November 2008, Aid Sudan will take team to Mvolo.

Eastern Equatoria (southeast) – This region shares international borders with Uganda in the south, with Kenya in the southeast and with Ethiopia in the northeast. It is home to the Lopit tribe, among others, and sheltered on two sides by low mountains. Aid Sudan is conducting a vision care project in the region in 2008 and anticipates returning to the area with mission trips in 2009.
